MISSION STATEMENT

VdC #66 WEEKEND

De Colores Via de Cristo Family,

I am writing with a heavy but hopeful heart.

After much prayer, conversation, and honest discernment, we as the secretariat have made the difficult decision to postpone the upcoming VDC #66 weekend scheduled for September.

This is not a decision we ever wanted to make. To my knowledge, we have never had to do this before. But the truth is, we do not currently have enough volunteers committed to working the weekend to make it happen in the way it needs to happen.

I want to be clear: this is not written to shame anyone. Life is busy, and we understand that not everyone can serve every time. But we also need to speak the truth in love.

VDC weekends happen because the Body of Christ shows up. They happen because people say yes. They happen because former Pilgrims remember what the weekend meant to them and choose to give that gift to someone else.

For several years, we have seen our numbers decline - both in Pilgrims attending and in workers stepping forward to serve. If we do not face that honestly, we risk watching something beautiful slowly fade away. And I do not believe that is what any of us want.

This movement has changed lives, strengthened faith, built friendships, and helped so many people experience the love and grace of Jesus Christ in a powerful way. Many of us are here because someone once made the sacrifice to serve on our weekend.

Now it is our turn to ask: how are we being called to help carry it forward?

The weekend may be postponed, but the mission is not.

We need our community to:

  1. Pray for the future of Via de Cristo.

  2. Serve on upcoming weekends.

  3. Invite future Pilgrims.

  4. Reconnect with the community, even if it has been some time since you've been involved.

If Via de Cristo has meant something to you, I ask you to prayerfully consider how you can help. Not someday, but now.

Your secretariat is working hard to turn this around so please keep us in prayer as we look to the future. Please be on the lookout for a community meeting or survey from us to get your feedback and suggestions in the near future.

Let us move forward together with honesty, humility, courage, and love.

In His peace,

George Simmons

DEVOTIONAL

After centuries of handling and mishandling, most religious words have become so shopworn nobody's much interesting anymore. Not so with grace, for some reason. Mysteriously, even derivatives like gracious and graceful still have some of the bloom left.
Grace is something you can never get but can only be given. There's no way to earn it or deserve it or bring it about anymore than you can deserve the taste of raspberries and cream or earn good looks or bring about your own birth.
A good sleep is grace and so are good dreams. Most tears are grace. The smell of rain is grace. Somebody loving you is grace. Loving somebody is grace. Have you ever tried to love somebody? A crucial eccentricity of the Christian faith is the assertion that people are saved by grace. There's nothing you have to do. There's nothing you have to do. There's nothing you have to do. The grace of God means something like; Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you.
There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.
